A group of young Guatemalan journalists had a chance to brush up on their election coverage skills at a workshop in Guatemala City in January.

The 12 journalists, from local dailies, radio and TV, spent five days at the workshop at the headquarters of Fotokids, a project run by former Reuters photographer Nancy McGirr which uses the visual arts to broaden the education of poor Guatemalan children.

The journalists tackled exercises on covering elections and heard tips on sourcing, interview techniques and other key skills from former Reuters correspondent Paul Iredale and Raquel Stenzel, the Reuters trainer for Latin America.

They also heard presentations on their role in this year’s presidential elections in Guatemala from civil groups set up to monitor the vote.  The journalists visited the headquarters of Guatemala’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal and were briefed on preparations for the elections.
